- Danforth is afraid postponing the hanging will weaken the court. Executions are expected to be seen by the people of Salem.
- Hale has spoken to everyone but John Proctor. Danforth has the idea to get Elizabeth to talk to him. Hoping she'll soften him up.
- Hale knows John is innocent but believes his life is more important than his pride.
- Elizabeth and John are left alone. The world seems to have a stop for John when he sees Elizabeth. After not seeing her for so long, He has difficulty believing it.
- John asks Elizabeth what he should do. She does want him alive but she can not tell him what to do.
- John and Elizabeth have realized their wrongs. He feels guilty for what he did. She apologizes to him as she is one to blame too. She was cold and had pushed him away.
- Hathorne comes to get John as the sun is soon to come up. Elizabeth is left upset, letting John do what is best.
