Typical and atypical development of children from birth through 5 years old.
2 year oldAtypical development
Typical means that the child is displaying accurate skills for their age compared to the same age peers. Atypical means that the child is developing skills at a different or slower rate than that of the same aged peers.
3 year oldTypical development
Infants learn to suck in order to sooth themselves. They begin to learn to depend on their needs being met in a consistent manner.

At times, infants can have difficulty learning to suck and sooth and may take longer to adjust to a scheduled routine.

They sit up w/ minimal assistance, interact with people toys. They smile, laugh, babble, roll over, investigate objects and be comfortable with familiar people in their presence without relying on them as much for comfort.

Begins becoming more independent, feeds self with finger foods, starts walking and climbing, talking more as well as interacting with others and may begin scribbling.

Does not walk when led, does not eat finger foods or brings spoon to mouth and still relies on presence of familiar people for comfort.
Preschool
Begins to include one another in their play, communicates more, enjoys copying others, displays more independence; follows simple directions and can speak in sentences, points to identify pictures or objects and knows the names of familiar people and objects.

Limited imaginative play or difficulty engaging in age-appropriate activities. May not use simple words or phrases, may have difficulty walking, running, or climbing; may not show interest in playing with others.

They are social butterflies. Love to adventure try new things, know what they like and dislike and prefer to play with others rather than alone. Love to sing and tell stories and understand concepts like same and different, counting, concept of time.

They are more independent and their eye-hand coordination is greatly improved; can count objects, trace shapes and tell the difference between real and make believe. They tell stories speaking clearly and using complete sentences.

Is not as independent with using utensils, dressing or toileting themselves; cannot build towers and play with other small toys withskill or make simple drawings freehand.
