  • IN 1803, the United States wanted to double the size of their land because of the growing population, so they purchased the Louisiana territory from the french.
  • Stephen Long's Exploration
  • "What man would prefer these savages..."
  • in 1804, The United States knew nothing about the land that they purchased. They ended up sending Lewis and Clark to explore it. These men said that the land that is now Kansas, is beautiful.
  • Jackson's Speech
  • In 1806, Zebulon Pike went to further explore the land. He said that the Kansa area (which is now Kansas), is like a desert and thought it was worthless. this led to a big debate on whether the land was good or not.
  • The Indian Removal Act
  • In 1819, Stephen Long went to settle the disagreement of the Kansa area. He too agreed with pike and labeled it as a desert.
  • This IS a desert. Man, Pike was right!
  • In 1829, Jackson described Native Americans as "savages." He then proceeded to describe the white Americans as perfect people and said that they should have more land in the eastern U.S.
  • In the year of 1830, because of the explorer's description of the kansa area, the people did not want to live there. Then, the government forced east American indians towards kansas.
