- Santiago went to the village dry goods shop to sell some wool, he thought the merchants daughter was very pretty. He talked to the girl and after he couldn't stop thinking about her.
- Santiago meets an old man namedMelchizedek.The man tells him about good and bad omens and he says that it's Santiagos duty to pursue his personal legend. He then gives Santiago two stones and aUrim and Thummim to interpret omens.
- Santiago decides that he doesn't want to Egypt and he gives up on his dream. Instead he goes to work for a crystal shop so that he will have enough money for new sheep.
- About a year later Santiago sees theUrim and Thummimstones and he decides that he wants to leave the shop and his goal of being a shepherdagain and continue on his journey to find the treasure in Egypt. He joins a caravan group so that he can travel there.
- The caravan makes it to the oasis. There Santiago meets a girl named Fatima who he falls in love with.
- The camel driver gathers everyone and tell them that a breakout of tribal war keeps them from continuing their journey.
