  • Good morning students!Today we will be studying about subsistence agriculture
  • Subsistence Agriculture
  • Shifting cultivation:-tribal people in dense forests-Also called slash and burn and causes many disadvantages -They clear a patch of land and burn the trees using primitive tools.-By 3-4 years they move to another soil due to infertility and weeds in soil.
  • Subsistence Agriculture is when farmers grow crops for family needs and domestic purposes for no commercial sales and when the output can be locally exchanged.
  • There are two types of subsistence agriculture-primitive and intensive farming
  • Primitive farming means using old tools for farming and agriculture. They are further divided into two types-shifting cultivation and nomadic herding.
  • Nomadic hunting:-Practiced by nomads.-graze their animals on natural pastures and move around for fodder and water.-Raise cattle, sheep etc.-Kazakhs, Tuaregs, Masais, Kirghiz people practice this.
  • INTENSIVE FARMING:-practiced in densely populated areas.-Land holdings are small and farming is very intensive, using a large amount of human labour.-Simple tools are used and farm machines are rare.-Farmers make optimum utilization of land.(high yielding seeds, irrigation, natural manure and chemical fertilizers.)-Major crops are grown like rice, wheat, millet etc.
