Storyboard Tekst

  • I shall accept you at my service. You will do whatever I ask from you.
  • Lord, my name is Caius, and I shall be at your service. Please take me in.
  • Father, you servants are causing chaos. Send them away or you shall be unwelcomed here.
  • “Saddle my horses; call my train together: Degenerate bastard! I'll not trouble thee. Yet have I left a daughter”(1.4.249-251).
  • Good, get out of here!
  • The initial part of Lear's retirement will be spent at Goneril's palace. Kent comes in Goneril's castle, disguised as a common peasant and posing as a man named Caius. He gets in the way of Lear, and after a brief exchange in which Caius emphasises his straightforwardness and honesty, Lear admits him into his service.
  • I must be king again. “O, let me not be mad, not mad, sweet heavenKeep me in temper: I would not be mad!”(1.5.44-45).
  • You made a mistake giving your powers to such daughters.
  • In Goneril's castle, Lear's knights start causing turmoil and problems. This enrages Gonerli, who is forced to confront Lear. She urges him to send half of his servants leave, or else he won't be welcomed here.
  • Lear is enraged and frustrated by this. He feels betrayed by his daughter's decision to send him away. Lear pleads to nature to curse Goneril and make her sterile. He begins to believe that entrusting his abilities to Gonerli was a mistake. He makes the decision to stay at Regans' palace.
  • For the time being, Lear is left alone with the fool. The fool claims that giving up his powers was a mistake and that he is now considered useless. Lear realises he has lost his identity as king and prays to the heavens for assistance, fearing he would go crazy.
