Storyboard Tekst

  • When Earth formed 4.6 billion years ago from a hot mix of gases and solids, it had almost no atmosphere. The surface was molten.
  • There was no oxygen gas on earth around 2.5 to 4 billion years ago
  • Over time, tiny photosynthetic organisms produced enough oxygen to react with the methane in the atmosphere, transforming it forever. About two billion years ago, the methane haze cleared and the sky turned blue.
  • Between 700-550 million years ago, in the late Proterozoic, oxygen levels in the oceans and atmosphere increased dramatically.
  • You are an aerobic organism. All aerobic organisms use oxygen to release energy from the proteins, fats, and carbohydrates in food. This process is called metabolism. Metabolism in your body’s cells also creates water and carbon dioxide, which your body excretes.
  • As plants became firmly established on land, life once again had a major effect on Earth’s atmosphere during the Carboniferous Period. Oxygen made up 20 percent of the atmosphere—about today’s level—around 350 million years ago, and it rose to as much as 35 percent over the next 50 million years.
