- Oedipus is cursed from the moment of his birth. His parents hear of a terrible prophecy and send him to be killed by wild animals. The servant who was given the command to let him die takes pity on him, and hands him off to a shepherd who happened to be passing by. Thinking he is dead, his mom and dad live a peaceful life as Oedipus lives on to fulfill an unknown and tragic prophecy.
- Oedipus, after hearing about the prophecy where he would kill his dad and marry his mom, he runs away in an attempt to avoid his fate. In doing so, he gets into a road rage with his birth father, and ends up killing him. Oedipus had no clue that he had just fulfilled the first part of the prophecy.
- Finding Thebes plagued by the Sphinx, Oedipus solves the riddle nobody else could solve, saving the town and therefore becoming king.

- Additionally, he marries his new wife, the queen. The queen, being his biological mother, was the final piece needed to fulfill his terrible fate. He had four children with his wife and mother, Jocasta. Unfortunately, nobody knew at this time who the other one really was.
- Oedipus finds out the truth--that he had fulfilled the prophecy, he was adopted, and that his life was doomed from the start. His wife, discovering this just moments before him, kills herself. Out of grief, he gauges his eyes out so that he can wander in blindness and misery for the rest of his life.
- Living in constant misery, Oedipus wanders around aimlessly for the rest of his life. The misery is passed on through his cursed children.
