- Miep and Mr. Kraler are putting the various things they have brought on the shelves for when Mr. Frank and everyone else goes into hiding. Mr. Kraler is sorry for the confusion.
- I'm sorry there is still so much confusion.
- Don't think of it. After all, we'll have plenty of leisure to arrange everything ourselves.
- In the main room Anne and Peter remove their shoes. Peter then takes his cat out of the carrier. Anne then recalls about her own cat that had to be left behind and how she misses her terribly.
- Mouschi! Mouschi! Mouschi! I love cats. I have one. They made me leave her behind. I'm going to miss her. What's yours? A him or her?
- He's a tom. He doesn't really like strangers.
- Mr. Frank surprises Anne with a diary. Anne longed for one and never had a diary. She looks around the room for a pencil and starts down the stairs but gets stopped by Mr. Frank.
- Anne! No!
- A diary! I've never had a diary! And I have always longed for one. Pencil, Pencil, pencil. I'm going down to the office to get a pencil.
