- During the king Arthur court's new year's eve feast, a strange person known only as the green knight pays the court an unexpected visit.
- King Arthur
- He plays a game with the group's leader or any other brave representative. The Green Knight claims that whoever accepts the challenge can strike him with his own axe if the challenger can find him in exactly one year and receive a blow in return.
- Sir Gawain!
- He wields the axe and with one deadly blow, the green knight's head is severed. Before riding away, the head reiterates the terms of the pact, reminding the young Gawain to seek him in a year and a day at the green chapel. After the green knight departs, the company returns to its festival, but Gawain is a simple man.
- Arthur is hesitant to react, but when the green knight mocks him, Arthur remains silent and accepts the challenge.
- Then Arthur takes hold of the green knight's weapon. Gawain rises to his feet and declares that he will accept the challenge.

- By December of the following year, Gawain has arrived at the castle, which informs him that they know where the green knight resides and that he is welcome to stay until the time comes to confront him.
