  • In the beginning of this scene George and Slim are sitting in cabin after Lennie insisted on having one of the pups. Slim, in his kindness agrees to give Lennie one of the pups. George thanks him and Slim begins to show his surprise for how close they are in the world they reside in. This causes George to talk to Slim about how Lennie and he became the friends that they are.
  •
  • Lennie then enters the cabin and he seems to be hiding something from the other men in the cabin. George already seems to know what's going on when he tells Lennie to go and put the pup back with it's mother. As this busies Lennie with something to do making him leave and head for the barn. This then leads to Candy and Carlson entering the cabin.
  • As they enter and get slightly settled in Carlson begins to complain heavily about Candy's dog suggesting to kill the dog. Candy repents saying that he's had the dog to long to get rid of it now. Slim joins Carlson's side suggesting that the dog be put out of it's misery. Slim also offers to let him have one of the pups that his own dog had.
  • Just then a different man from one of the other cabins walks in bringing a letter. The man carrying the letter is Whit who then shows the paper to Slim exclaiming that some one they knew has written and published a magazine. After this Carlson continues with his pestering about the dog and Slim also says a few words before getting distracted by the magazine about how he would wish that someone would do that for him.
  • Candy finally agrees to Carlson's plan and lets him take his dog. After Slim says to grab a shovel implying that Carlson would bury the dog for Candy instead of the dog just being left without being berried. While George, Slim, and Whit decide to play a game of cards. The room is tense and quite silently awaiting the moment when Candy's dog would be gone.
  • In the final moments of this scene Candy lays down on his bunk and doesn't face the other men. As the suspense and tension begins to grow in the distant background you can hear a gunshot. Everyone knew what had happened and noticed Candy flinch at that. This part of the story is important due to it's heavy foreshadowing of Lennie's death all the way down to how similarly Lennie was killed to the dog.
