  • I think renting is the best option for us, Bob. We don't have to worry about maintenance, taxes, or mortgages. Plus we can move anytime we want, and we would have more flexibility choosing where to live.
  • I disagree, Alice. Buying is a better investment in the long run. We can build equity, customize our home, and enjoy more stability and privacy. Renting is just throwing money away every month.
  • Alice visits a rental agency and meets with an agent. She fills out an application form and pays a fee. The agent shows her some available apartments in her price range and location preference.
  • Here are some options for you. This one is a studio apartment with a balcony and a view of the park. It's $800 per month, plus utilities. This one is a one-bedroom apartment with a washer and dryer in the unit. It's $1,000 per month, including water and trash. This one is a two-bedroom apartment with a fireplace and a garage. It's $1,200 per month, plus HOA fees.
  • Hmm, they all look nice, but I'm not sure if I can afford them. How much is the security deposit? And what about the lease terms?
  • What if I want to break the lease early? What will happen?
  • Ouch! That sounds harsh!
  • Then you'll have to pay a penalty fee of two months' rent as well as forfeit your security deposit.
  • The security deposit is equal to one month's rent, and the lease terms are flexible. You can sign for six months, one year, or month-to-month.
