Storyboard Tekst

  • It's no easy task to put on a production. The success of any performance, whether it be a play, a musical, or a dance event, depends on everyone working together and contributing.
  • Hello fellow thespians, welcome to the theatre! I am here to show you the magic behind the scenes.
  • The show's success is the result of many people working together. Every individual pursues a special purpose that plays into the end goal of the production.
  • We are the actors!
  • I am the director!
  • We are the choir!
  • I play the violin in the orchestra!
  • Often times when people go to see a show, they only consider the visual aspects of the performance. But with that being said...There is a special group of people behind the scenes that oversee and manage the various technical elements during the performance.
  • Think about the last time you were at a show, did you think about who changed the lighting or switched out the furniture on stage?
  • When watching a play, who do you think changes the background and takes the actors from a scene in town...
  • ...to the woods?
  • Hint! We wear all black to avoid being seen!
  • Just because you can't see them working during the preformance, doesn't mean they aren't contributing. Infact, if you can't see them it means they are doing a good job.
  • If you said stage crew you are right!
  • Tell us about what it is like being on stage crew.
  • Stage crew is its own special discourse community within the theatre community.
  • We all share a common goal, which is a key characteristic of a discourse community.
  • but what about you guys?
  • That's really special, but what is your common goal? I know the goal of the actors is to portray the best version of their assigned character,
  • Our goal as a community is to make sure all the technical elements of the performance run smoothly.
  • We also get to mess with the lighting during the show. The spotlight is important for solos.
  • Tell everyone about your secret language. Whenever I hear yall speak to each other I can never tell what your talking about!
  • It's not a secret language, we just have a unique lexicon of words, which basically means we use words and phrases that are unique to working on stage crew
  • For further explanation, the phrases and words we use backstage are unique to this context, and wouldn't really make sense anywhere else.
  • For example, when there is a complete scene change, stage crew has to go in and "break the scene"
  • What?! Why would you destroy the scene?!
  • Thank god! I was nervous for a second.
  • Noooo don't worry, nobody is actually breaking anything. It just means we need to switch out the scenery and replace the stuff on stage with whats needed for the next scene
  • There are lots of words such as, the jump, the cyc or the scrim that are all different parts of the stage and not known by anyone else other than stage crew members.
  • So if you ever hear someone say "LIGHT UP THE CYC" it means we need to add lighting to the cyc sheet behind the curtains.
  • aaaaand end scene.
  • And if acting is not for you, now you know all about stage crew and how it works so you could do that too!
  • Well, that's all, I hope you learned a lot and consider auditioning for our rendition of The Wizard of OZ in the Spring!
