  • The Monsters are Due on Maple Theme: Humans are each other's worst enemy.
  • One major theme of the teleplay The Monsters are Due on Maple Street by Rod Sterling is that, humans are each other's worst enemy. One example that supports this theme is when Charlie shoots Peter Vanhorn out of fear out of fear. On pages 678-679 we can clearly see that fear can get the best out of humans and cause them to harm each other as an outcome. Another example that can prove this is when Tommy explained that aliens were behind everything. The people of Maple Street were angry by all his none sense. But when they realized his assumption about the aliens was correct they assumed he was one too because he knew, so they attacked Tommy. This attack on Tommy adds on to show that any person that is slightly correct about something that could've been foreseen can easily be attacked, and this can be seen in pages 670-672. In addition, we can recall that towards the end of the story all of the neighborhood house lights began to go on and off, which led everyone to blame each other and bluntly accuse each other of being aliens, and resulted in immense chaos. In conclusion, with the provided pieces of evidence it can now be understood that humans are their own worst enemies because of how easily they can blame and attack each other when there is no explanation as to when, something inexplicable happens.
