- What have I done??
- I should become Buddhist.
- Ashoka became emperor around 265 BCE. He set out to expand his kingdom by force. He conquered the last of India's independent kingdoms and other land to the west and expanded his kingdom to cover almost all of the Indian subcontinent. He was said to be very cruel and was nicknamed Chan Ashoka.

- The kingdom of Kalinga was the last part of India to resist Ashoka's control. In the mid-200s BCE, Ashoka led his army to battle against Kalinga. More than 100,000 lives were lost in the bloody battle. Though Ashoka won the battle, he was devastated with the amount of damage he had caused.

- Soon after the battle, he saw a Buddhist monk meditating in the street. Ashoka wondered how someone could be so calm and happy amid chaos. Ashoka decided to become Buddhist. He became a new person by ruling with peace and nonviolence.
- My empire fell apart but I taught people about BOOdhism.
- Ashoka then encouraged his subjects to become followers of Buddhism, but he allowed religious freedom to everyone. He had temples built throughout India and established laws that followed Buddhist principles. He had them inscribed on rocks and pillars all around the empire. Ashoka's empire had peace and prosperity due to his new way of ruling.
- Ashoka then declared that everyone should have respect and be equal. He started charitable acts toward the poor and showed respect to animal life by banning unnecessary slaughter of animals. He then made centers of learning and improved water systems for trade and agriculture. He built roads for travels and made hospitals. He even set up missionaries for Buddhism,that went beyond the Indian subcontinent.
- Ashoka died in about 238 BCE. When this happened, the empire fell apart. Even though the empire fell apart, Ashoka helped Buddhism spread to many different places. Without him, Buddhism would not be as widely practiced as it is today.
