  • After how many years, Evelyn is now a woman who shares her story to educate everyone that abortion is not a murder. I am Evelyn, and I am telling everyone that our body, our choice.
  • Yet, the criminalization of abortion has not prevented abortion, but instead has made the procedure unsafe and potentially deadly for over 500,000 women each year.
  • For over a century, abortion has been criminalized in the Philippines through the Penal Code of the 1870 and were incorporated into the Revised Penal Code passed in 1930.
  • In 2008 alone, 1000 women died and 90,000 more suffered complications due to illegal abortion. Now, let me ask you a question. Are you pro-choice or pro-life?
  • Would you want Juana, and the women of the Philippines, own and control their bodies? Would you want Juana, and the women of the Philippines, be given the right for abortion? Here’s why we should be PRO-CHOICE instead of pro-life.
  • First, abortion without proper medical support endangers the mother’s life. Legalizing abortion would facilitate proper medical support. Access to professionally-performed abortions reduces maternal injury and death caused by unsafe and illegal abortions.
  • Modern abortion procedures are safe and do not cause lasting health issues such as cancer and infertility.
  • Second, if women receive abortions, they would less likely to suffer mental health problems than women denied with abortions. And women who are denied with abortions are more likely to become unemployed, to be below the poverty line, and to become victims of domestic violence.
  • Third, abortion gives women the option to choose not to bring fetuses with such severe disorders that death is guaranteed before or shortly after death.
  • Remember my story of a girl, named Evelyn, who got pregnant at a very early age, who molested and raped which resulted to pregnancy. She wanted to own and control her body. She wanted an abortion.
  • Do not call yourself PRO-LIFE if you do not value Evelyn's life.
  • Let us be PRO-CHOICE and let Juana and all the women of the Philippines given the right to abortion because no woman can call herself free when she does not own and control her own body.
