  • The Walking Purchase
  • In 1737, Thomas Penn "claimed" to have found a contract his father, William Penn, made with the Lenape. The contract stated that the Lenape would give Penn the amount of land that a man could walk in a day and a half. (ended up with 1.2 million acres)
  • What?
  • This contract "states" that you will give us all the land one man can run in a day and a half.
  • Contract
  • We elect you as our colonial assembly
  • Colonial Assemblies
  • Colonial assemblies were elected by the colonists to make laws, but colonial governors were elected by the king and they could overrule the elected assemblies. Only white land-owning men, over 21 could vote.
  • We elect you as our colonial assembly
  • The Stamp Act was a law requiring colonists to buy a stamp with every piece of paper they bought. Colonists protested and argued about the right that parliament had to tax them. They argued it was a violation of British rights because they had no one to represent them in Parliament.
  • The Stamp Act
  • One paper please.
