  • The development of jobs was important to us because it helped inspire our workers to upgrade their skills, it led to newer and better ways of doing things, and added much greater diversity to our community life.
  • In the Paleolithic times, people's main job was finding enough food to survive. Because they were hunter-gatherers who were nomads, they had to move from place to place in search of food. This was not a stable food supply, so food was the main focus.
  • Having a stable food supply allowed us to develop new kinds of jobs. Such as, farmers, weavers, basket makers, tool makers, stoneworkers, and traders. Concentrating on one job at a time gave us the chance to improve our skills. Farmers learned to grow more than 14 kinds of plants, clothing makers made a way to spin and weave. and some of us mined flint, so stoneworkers could create sharper tools. We didn't just want to survive. We wanted to make ourselves, and our surroundings more beautiful. We decorated our pottery and polished stones.
  • As Neolithic people settled down to start agriculture, which is the farming and domesticating animals, trade became a common activity. Because they were no longer hunter-gatherers and nomads, some people didn't have resources in their areas since they didn't move from place to place in search of food. As people became more and more skilled in their jobs, they needed materials that would be stronger and more beautiful. This became the job of traders. They conducted trade by traveling very long distances for these resources. They crossed mountains on foot, rode donkeys across deserts, and sailed across the Mediterrarnean Sea on ships. Common items were flint and obsidian. Obsidian was used to make knife blades, arrowheads, and mirrors. And, flint was used to sharpen these more advanced tools. After getting a stable food supply, people also wanted to make themselves and their surroundings more beautiful. Traders traded for beauty products like a red ore called hematite. The invention of trade allowed people to make more use of these resources, they met people from other places, and it helped spread ideas and knowledge from town to town.
  • Today, we have better transportation, so trade is much more easier than in the Neolithic Age. These vehicles include ships, trucks, trains, and airplanes. This new transportation helps us conduct trade faster and easier. Instead of trading one item for another, we use various kinds of currency. Like U.S. dollars, European Euros, Japenese Yen, Canadian dollars, and more. But, these different kinds of currency don't have the same exchange rates. For example, 1,000 Korean Won is equal to about 0.70 U.S. dollars. Trade today is usually conducted between two different countries. We exchange imports and exports. Common goods include metal, energy, livestock, and agricultural. Most of these goods are transported using trucks.
  • Like people from the Neolithic Age, we also settled in one area to start farming and domesticating animals. In some areas, we don't have certain resources. So, in the U.S. government, getting these materials became the job of the USTR (United States Trade Representative). Trade helps us spread technology, innovation, and ideas.
