  • Front desk
  • Mia Tang
  • Working
  • The washing machines were broken, we need to wash the clothes by hand.
  • We also need to compensate and buy a new one. We don't have any money.
  • Mia Tang and her family are Chinese. Mia moved to America with her family from China when she was eight. Her mum told her they can live in big house with dog and do and eat whatever they want. However, life their is not like this.
  • The stolen car
  • I'm sorry.
  • Mia's parents finally found a job as a cleaner in a motel owned by Mr. Yao. The family can live in the motel but with low salary and heavy work load. Mia found working in the front desk interesting. She helped customers to check in and check out. She spent lots of time in the front desk.
  • Winners
  • Mia's parents work very hard everyday but were paid unfairly. They got only a little amount of money. She knew that her parents would pretend that everything was alright. So Mia tried her best to help them.
  • Personal feelings
  • I like the book!
  • One day, a car in the motel was stolen by someone. Hank who lived in the motel is a African American, was accused as the thief, just because of his skin color, but he was innocent. Mia asked for an apologize from the police. This shows about the racism problem in America in 1990.
  • Finally, with Mia's plan. Her parents, motel guests, immigrant bought Mr.Yao's motel together. Including Mr.Yao's son Jason. The buyers of the motel happily jumped into the swimming pool and took a picture together!
  • You don't want to go swimming with these loser, do you?
  • No, Dad. I am going swimming with the winners.
  • Come! Jason-
  • I appreciate how Mia overcomes obstacles in America in such a young age. I also learned from the book that we shouldn't disrespect and dislike others who are not the same as we are. Such as poor people. This book is cheerful and sometimes humorous. Yet, it reflect the racial discrimination problems in the society.
