  • The attack on Pearl Harbor came as a complete surprise. Japanese fighter planes bombed Pearl Harbor. The bombers dropped bombs and torpedoes on the warships, while the fighter planes attacked the US fighter planes on the ground so they could not take off and fight back. There were 2 waves of attacks and by the end of the second wave, a lot of US ships were destroyed.
  • the Japanese launched fighter planes and bombers from four aircraft carriers to attack the island of Midway. 3 US aircraft carriers were closing in on the Japanese force. While the Japanese were focused on attacking Midway, the U.S. carriers launched an attack. The first wave of planes were torpedo bombers. The Japanese were able to fend off the torpedo attacks. Most of the U.S. torpedo attack planes were shot down and none of the torpedoes hit their target. while the Japanese guns were aimed low at the torpedo bombers, American dive bombers dove in and attacked from high up in the sky. These bombs hit their target and three of the four Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk. The Yorktown then engaged in battle with the final Japanese carrier, the Hiryu. Both carriers were able to launch a number of bombers against the other. In the end, both the Yorktown and the Hiryu were sunk

The US was contemplating an invasion of Japan. an atomic bomb named Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima. The city was destroyed and tens of thousands of people were killed. The bomb itself was over 10 feet long and weighed around 10,000 pounds. A small parachute was on the bomb in order to slow its drop and allow the plane time to fly away from the blast zone. Despite witnessing the terrible destruction of the bomb on Hiroshima, Emperor Hirohito and Japan still refused to surrender. Three days later, another atomic bomb, nicknamed Fat Man, was dropped on Nagasaki. Again the devastation was horrible
