  • Hush Mama! Leave!
  • "The bear had been their undoing, though at the time they had all laughed." (p.1)
  • Oh Lord deliver us!
  • Character Vs. Society
  • "She did not hope to see Ezekial again. She hoped that he could cross the border fast as a fox - far away from the snares of those who would trap him. (p.43)
  • Thank you Lyddie.
  • I hope you make it to Canada safely.
  • Character Vs. Character
  • "'I'd rather you wouldn't go at all' Amelia said coolly. Lyddie smiled. She didn't mean to seem unfriendly or even ungrateful, thought it was tiresome to be always beholden to Amelia." (p. 67)
  • I'll be FINE.
  • I'd rather you wouldn't go at all.
  • This is Character Vs. Nature because this is conflict between Lyddie and a bear when it enters her home and changes her life. The bear is an animal, so this is a conflict between Lyddie and nature.
  • This is Character Vs. Society because Lyddie finds a enslaved person in her home named Ezekial. He is trying to make it up north to Canada for freedom but many people on his way will try to capture and sell him for money, so this is him up against most of society.
  • This is Character Vs. Character because Lyddie's roommate Amelia is trying to stop Lyddie from going to someones house, and this makes Lyddie upset.
