- One day when Joseph's older brothers were taking care of the sheep, Jacob sent Joseph to check on them. When Joseph's brothers saw him coming, they decided to kill him.

- What? We didn't kill him...

- But Joseph's oldest brother Reuben said not to take his life but instead throw him in a cistern. A cistern is a pit used to store water, but these cisterns had no water in them. Reuben secretly planned to come back and rescue Joseph.

- Yeah, we totally found this and have no idea what happened!
- When Joseph arrived, his brothers took off his special robe and threw him into the pit. Then his brothers met a group of travelers on their way to Egypt. Judah suggested they sell Joseph to these people instead of killing him. So they pulled him out of the pit and sold him as a slave.

- God has the power to overcome evil with good.
- Reuben was not there when his brothers sold Joseph to be a slave. When he came back to rescue Joseph, he was very upset that he was not there.

- The brothers thought of a plan to trick their father. They killed a goat and dipped Joseph's robe in the blood. They let Jacob think Joseph was dead, and Jacob was so very sad.
- Even though Joseph's brothers put him in great danger, God was at work. God protected Joseph from death. This is only the beginning of Joseph's story!
