- Toni Morisson was born on February, 18 1931 in Lorain, in the state of Ohio, in the USA.
- She was born under the name of Chloe Anthony Wofford.
- She was the second of four children: Lois her older sister, George and Raymond her younger brothers. She was the daughter of Ramah, a housekeeper, and George Wofford, a welder.
- Toni's parents encouraged their children to study, to read, from an early age, so that when she entered the first year of elementary school, Hawthorne Elementary School, she was not only the only African-American, she was also the only student in the class who could already read.
- At the age of twelve, she converted to Catholicism, she take the baptismal name Anthony in memory of St. Anthony of Padua.

- She attended Lorain High School where she showed her taste for general and Latin literature and was particularly passionate about the works of Jane Austen, Russian novelists and 19th-century classics.
- In 1949, she passed her high school diploma brilliantly, she was admitted to the most prestigious African-American university, Howard University to study literature. In 1953, she obtained the Bachelor of Arts, she benefited from the teaching of the poet Sterling Brown and the philosopher Alain Locke.In 1955, wishing to continue her studies, she was admitted to Cornell University, where she defended her Master of Arts.
- After graduation, she began a career as a professor at Texas Southern University (1955-1957) before returning to Howard University (1957-1964) as an assistant professor in English literature. Among her students was the future civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael.
