- The tale of The Hobbit begins when the elderly wizard Gandalf pays a visit to the hobbit-hole of Bilbo Baggins, a middle-aged hobbit with a distaste for anything uncomfortable. Gandalf attempts to recruit Bilbo to join him on an adventure, to which Bilbo declines.
- Climax
- The next day, Gandalf arrives at Bilbo's hobbit hole with a company of thirteen dwarves, including the esteemed Thorin Oakenshield. They recruit Bilbo as a burglar in their grand plot to take back the Oakenshield family treasure from the dragon Smaug, who lives under the Lonely Mountain.
- Falling Action
- The adventure gets off to a good start, but eventually, Bilbo gets lost in the goblin caves. He acquires a ring, which he later finds is infused with magic and allows him to become invisible. He confronts a ghastly creature known as Gollum in order to keep his treasure, and who he escapes to find his way to safety.
- Resolution
- After the great dragon Smaug is killed and the treasure is claimed by the dwarves, they set up a camp under the mountain, and refuse to let the elven army, led by Bard the Bowman, who killed Smaug, in. This leads to the legendary confrontation known as the Battle of the Five Armies.
- In the aftermath of the heated battle, Bilbo reveals himself, as he had slipped on his ring to escape death, and finds that Thorin is on his deathbed. After his death, Bilbo takes his share of the treasure and sets off for home with Gandalf. They stay with the elven folk for a few days before completing the journey.
- Upon returning home, Bilbo finds that he had been presumed dead by the rest of the hobbit folk, and that his family was auctioning off all his property. In the end, he was able to buy most of his things back, and he was generous with his newfound wealth, which his how he was able to maintain the love of his anti-adventurous family.
