  • Greeks lived in Ionia until around 546 BC. In 546 BC the Persians invaded, intending to take Ionia for themselves. What they weren't expecting, was for the greeks to fight back. When they revolted, Athens sent soldiers to help them. The Persians, led by King Darius the Great, defeated the Ionian Greeks and took Ionia for themselves. That wasn't enough for King Darius though. He vowed to get revenge on the Greeks for even trying to fight back.
  • Battle of Salamis
  • We finally beat the Persians!
  • OH NO! We are trapped!
  • Darius attempts to get revenge on Athens by sending a Persian fleet of 25,000 men to a small plain called Marathon. After several hours, the Persians fled and the battle was over. The Persians weren't well trained in land combat, and the Athenians had been ready in their phalanx formation. The Persians had lost over 6,000 men, whereas the Athenians had lost fewer than 200.
  • Xerxes, Darius the Great's son, wanted to avenge his father by taking down Athens. Although the Greeks were badly divided, they decided to go to battle with the Persians. However, Xerxes and the Persian army had underestimated the Greeks' abilities. The Greeks were ready with over 7,000 men, including 300 Spartans. The Greeks were able to hold off the Persians for three days before a traitor told them a way around. The battle ended with the Spartans sacrificing themselves by staying and fighting the Persians, while the other Greeks retreated.
  • The Battle of Salamis took place when Themistocles convinced the Athenians to evacuate the city and fight at sea. The Greeks led the Persians into a channel near Salamis. This channel was so small that the Persian ships, that were extremely large, could not navigate their way through like the Greeks could. The Persian ships could not turn in the channel, leaving an opening for the Greeks to attack. This strategy led the Greeks to victory against the Persians.
