  • On the Phone
  • "Asagai doesn't care how houses, look, Mama-he's an intellectual."
  • "Who is that you inviting over here with this house looking like this? You ain't got the pride you was born with!"
  • Who's Asagai?
  • "Asagai, Joseph. Ah-sah-guy... He's from Nigeria."
  • "Oh, that's the little country that was founded by slaves way back..."
  • The gifts
  • "Oh, Asagai!... You got them for me!... How beautiful... and the records too!"
  • Ruth just got off the phone with Asagai who is coming up to the apartment to see her. Ruth is very exited to see him again, since he was away for the whole summer in Canada. Mama is worried if he should come, since the apartment isn't clean.
  • Her Identity
  • "I thought you were the most serious little thing I had ever seen—you said:“Mr. Asagai—I want very much to talk with you. About Africa. You see, Mr. Asagai, I am looking for my identity!”
  • Beneatha has to explain to Mama that africans are just as normal as any other person. She dosn't want Mama asking werid questions about Africa while Asagai is here.
  • culture
  • Asagai comes in and gives Beneatha colorful robes and records. He gives these as gifts from his home area, this shows that he was thinking of her when he was gone.
  • The nickname
  • Asagia teasing around about how Beneatha treats her culture. He's trying to teach her more about her identity of where she's from. Since she want's to know so much, to have more of an experince.
  • "Yes-"
  • Mama ends up saying what she thinks about Africa. Asagai dosn't say anything because he dosn't want to tell the truth that it's not his culture.  Mama seems very thrilled about Asagia being over she offers him to come more often.
  • I think it’s so sad the way our American Negroes don’t know nothing about Africa ’cept Tarzan and all that.
  • When Asagai is about to leave he call's Beneatha by a nickname. Mama asks why he called her that he tells them that it means "One for Whom Bread—Food—Is Not Enough Is". This meaning shows that Asagai cares about Beneatha and wants to help her find her identity.
  • YOU didn’t tell us what Alaiyo means … for all I know, you might be calling me Little Idiot or something …
