- Mare Barrow has always lived her life as a red, but what happens when that all changes and she gets thrown in with the silvers.
- The Conflict
- Set in a future version of the USA, in the country now named North. The characters spend most of their time in the Summerton Palace.
- Plot
- Mare the protagonist is a red that found out she had powers and was taken away from her home, this makes her even more protective of her family than before, she's also strong-willed. Cal and Maven are the two princes with Cal being the crown prince. Both of them help Mare a little bit along with way.
- Understatement
- The main conflict is about a war that has been going on for decades between Norta and the neighboring country. The silvers have been using the Reds as soldiers for the whole war and the reds are done with being used so they are trying to start a revoltuiton.
- During the time when Mare was a servant during the ceremony where they picked the new queen. One of the candidates makes Mare fall down near an electrical pipe thing. She accidentally falls down and creates more electricity and surprises all the silvers because of this. This happening starts everything in the book, If she didn't fall, she wouldn't have found out her powers, so she wouldn't have started anything.
- After Mare is on the floor in the book it says Evangeline stares at me, her eyes wide. She looks angry, confused - and scared. Of me. Somehow she is scared of me. This is an understatement because how Evangeline may look a little scared on the outside, she is extremely scared on the inside. She is also very mad and angry at Mare because she interrupted her performance.
