  • Cells make up living things, and are the basic building blocks of all life.
  • Well.. Let me show you.
  • Cells
  • Hey what are you made of?
  • What are cells?
  • How did cells form?
  • 4.5 Billion Years Ago.......
  • Believe it or not this is how Earth looked approximately 4.5 billion years ago.
  • Earth was constantly being hit by meteoroids and asteroids.
  • Where are we ??
  • These particles consisted of organic molecules like Carbon and Amino Acids. And these Amino Acids combined together to form more complex compounds.
  • When the meteoroids and asteroids collided with Earth they produced little particles.
  • How does this have anything to do with the formation of life and the first cell?
  • Several scientists have tested this out. For example one scientist, Don Brownlee used planes near the upper atmosphere with sticky pads on the wings and collected space dust and examined it and found that it was rich in life, specifically carbon.
  • How do you know this?
  • You said something about Amino Acids?
  • Prokaryotic cells don’t have a nucleus or membrane enclosed organelles. These include organisms like bacteria. But you and I and examples of Eukaryotic cells.
  • There’s more to the origin of life. The first forms of life are thought to have been prokaryotic cells
  • Let me show you
  • WOW!
  • So how did Eukaryotic cells form?
  • This mutual relationship is an example of endosymbiosis. Through the course of evolution the prokaryotic cell emerged as a single organism with either a mitochondria or a chloroplast. This new organism was called a Eukaryotic cell.
  • This is how the first Eukaryotic cell was formed. A prokaryotic cell ate another prokaryotic cell. And the engulfed prokaryotic and the host formed a mutual relationship where it was able to grow and thrive inside the host
  • What is this?
  • Additionally the DNA of the two organelles is similar to prokaryotes. Both have circular DNA. Also similar to prokaryotes, mitochondria and chloroplasts can reproduce by themselves.
  • In fact there is a lot of evidence that supports the endosymbiont theory. Similar to the ancestral engulfed prokaryotes which had 2 membranes, both mitochondria and chloroplasts have 2 membranes.
  • Yes! Another scientist used a gas powered gun with amino acids to stimulate the pressure from a collision and found that the color of amino acids had changed to brown, indicating that it had formed peptides
  • What evidence supports this theory?
  • I know it's crazy
  • Anytime!
  • Wow, I can’t believe so much happened and evolved to get to where we are today
  • Thanks for teaching me so much about the formation of life
