- Baba and Amir take a trip to the doctor because Baba caught a cold and began coughing up blood. The doctor soon broke the news to them of a suspicious spot on his lung that would need to be looked at by a Pulmonary clinic.
- "Cancer?" (154).
- "He's got a spot on his right lung. I want them to check it out."(Hosseini 154).
- "I'm going to miss him" (176).
- "Soraya" (175).
- They just lowered Baba into the ground, and Amir feels the need to go and to find Soraya. So he goes to the mosque and asks her if she would like to take a walk. They end up going on a walk and find a bench to sit on and talk. Soon enough Amir lets out the emotions he's been holding back.
- "Yes?"(176)
- Soraya and Amir make the decision to try for a baby. They try for about a year and nothing happens leading to Soraya becoming more and more frustrated that nothing is happening. With the constant hints Khala Jamila kept giving she soon began to think something may be wrong.
- "Sometimes, it takes a while,..." (184).
- "Then let's see a doctor"(184).
- "A year isn't a while, Amir! Something's wrong, I know it"(184).
