- Although neither nation had colonists living in the region, both wanted to trade furs with the Native Americans who lived there. To protect their fur trade, the French built several forts in the region prior to the war.
- The Sons of Liberty held protests, signed petitions, and printed newspaper articles to gain support for their cause.
- The Congress adopted a declaration of individual rights. Many of these rights would later be written into the nations founding documents.
