Jesus told the Pharisees that if someone does not go through the gate of the sheep pen and climbs in a different way is a thief and robber. The one who enters the gate is the sheep's shepherd and they will listen to his voice.
He calls the sheep by name and leads them out. When he brings all of them out, he walks ahead of them. His sheep follow him because they know his voice and will never follow a stranger. In fact they will run away from him because they do not recognize the strangers voice.

The Pharisees did not understand what Jesus had meant. Jesus made sure they knew that he was the gate of the sheep and anyone who has entered before him were thieves and robbers. Jesus is the gate and whoever enters through him will be saved. They go in and go out and then find pasture.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd and he will lay down his life the sheep. Jesus will not abandoned them like the hired hand will. The hired hand does not own the sheep so when they see a wolf come he runs and the flock gets attacked and scatters.
Jesus knows him sheep and his sheep know him. Just like his father knows him and he knows his father. Jesus will gather other sheep and and they will listen to his voice and there will only be one flock of sheep.

The reason Jesus' father loves him is because he will lay down his life only to take it back up again. No one takes his life away but he lays it down on his own accord. Jesus has authority to lay it down and take it up again. He received this command from his Father.
