- My daughter has no language and because of her safety, we aren’t willing to have her attend Braidswood.

- Thomas Gallaudet notices that Alice Cogswell, his neighbor and daughter of Mason Fitch Cogswell, is language less and thinks effort needs to be made to teach her.

- He convened a meeting with 10 “city fathers” that were able to raise enough funds to send Gallaudet to Europe.

- Gallaudet meets Clerc when he attends a public demonstration given by abbé Sicard in London. Later Clerc offers to go to America with Gallaudet to help establish a school.

- In 1817, Gallaudet and Clerc rent rooms whereAlice Cogswell becomes their first student to enroll.
- In 1818, Gallaudet and Clerc get a congressman from Connecticut to sponser the school and grant then 20,000 acres of land were they would build their school.
- Because Clerc taught French sign, students of his blended their own created native language with his teachings. This evolved into ASL.
