  • Nick decides not to call out to Gatsby on the night he had dinner with the Buchanons because Gatsby radiated intimation. His vibe hinted subtly that he was content to be alone.

  • Nick was slightly annoyed at Tom when he made the supercilious assumption that Nick was okay with taking a detour on that Sunday afternoon. The decision was arrogant and showed disdain to Nicks interests.
  • supercilious-having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy.
  • Ferret wandering into the garden during a Gatsby party could only mean that he was cleaned out from gambling and Associated Traction would have to fluctuate profitably the next day.
