English literature began with religious themes and followed social and historical changes, moving towards anthropocentrism.
Its history was marked by writers known and studied to this day, such as John Milton, Jane Austen, Lord Byron, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, T. S. Eliot and George Orwell, in addition to the great master William Shakespeare.

The English language was born in the current territory of Great Britain, a land widely desired and invaded by different peoples, which resulted in the multiplicity of its origins and varied influences. It is considered a West Germanic language, but was under Latin and Scandinavian influence and, later, Norman and French.
The Romans left Great Britain in 410 and the first Anglo-Saxons landed in 449. It was the Saxons who were responsible for introducing the first elements of Latin vocabulary into English. This is because these Germanic peoples had come into contact with the Romans before abandoning the continent and had already incorporated Latin words into their languages.
