  • Hi. I'm Mr. Droplet and in this our journey on knowing the water sources of Earth.
  • Water is vital for life. Clean fresh water is necessary for drinking and sanitation, providing for our crops, livestock and industry, and creating and sustaining the ecosystems on which all life depends.
  • Groundwater is the water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand, and rock. It is held in aquifers—permeable water-bearing rock and/or sediment—and can be extracted through wells or bubbles up naturally through a spring or is discharged into lakes or streams.
  • Groundwater is the most accessed source of freshwater around the world, including as drinking water, irrigation, andmanufacturing. Groundwater accounts for about half of the world's drinking water, 40% of its irrigation water, and a third of water for industrial purposes.
  • Surface water is any body of water above ground, including streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, reservoirs, and creeks. The ocean, despite being saltwater, is also considered surface water.
  • The main uses of surface water include drinking-water and other public uses, irrigation uses, and for use by the thermoelectric-power industry to cool electricity-generating equipment.
  • Surface water and groundwater are both important sources for community water supply needs.
  • Surface water and groundwater are reservoirs that can feed into each other. While surface water can seep underground to become groundwater, groundwater can resurface on land to replenish surface water.

  • To protect groundwater and surface water from the threats of over extraction and pollution, and to manage it sustainably for the future, it is essential to understand where groundwater in specific locations is originating from, what its quality is and how quickly it replenishes. And today climate change is visible we must save water at home, or anywhere.
  • Generally, both groundwater and surface water can provide safe drinking water, as long as the sources are not polluted and the water is sufficiently treated.
