  • Hi my name is Doctor Amy and today we will be talking about VUR, also known as Vesicoureteral Reflux.
  • VUR or Vesicoureteral Reflux is when your Urine flows from the bladder to the kidney when the urine is supposed to flow from the kidney to the bladder, Vesicoureteral Reflux is found in kids younger than two, one out of 3 percent of kids get VUR. VUR is mostly found in males.
  • For example, Savannah had VUR. She got VUR from her uncle on her moms side, so VUR is a hereditary.
  • There are multiple ways to test for VUR, cystogram, urine or blood test, and abdominal ultrasound.
  • If diagnosed with VUR there are different ways to treat VUR, like medications and different treatments. Some kids may overtime grow out of VUR but in some cases if a child has a fever or gets a UTI (Urine Tract Infection) then surgery is recommended. In Savannah's case she had to get surgery.
  • The surgery procedure is called Ureteral Reimplation (encrustation to help prevent VUR), this procedure Anti-Urinary Reflux is to help prevent the Urine from going back into the kidney
  • If VUR is genetically (depending on if your family had VUR) passed on to you there is no way of preventing it, however better ways of using the bathroom can also prevent VUR. Once you get the surgery and make sure the surgery was successful then most likely you won't get VUR again. If you don't get surgery it's also not likely for you to get VUR again.
