  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that Blaming Others and Trying To Find a Scapegoat Can Lead to Negative Consequences. For example, when the group started blaming Les Goodman for his car starting. They turned on Goodman because his car was the only other car that was able to get started. This soon led to the residents growing suspicious of Les because they were scared that he was the alien. In addition, others started to turn on Steve as well. The reason for this is because he was always in the basement fixing his radio and it was never complete after all those years of being down there. Steve's wife explained that he was just working on the radio and it was down in the basement. This soon led to Steve being enraged at the group and almost breaking away from the residents. Another reason is when Charlie blames Tommy. Charlie blamed Tommy because he was trying to get away and get out of the situation he was in. After that, the group charged at her son and this led to chaos as people started chasing Tommy, grabbing weapons, and hurting their own neighborhood friends. In conclusion, you shouldn't blame others and try to escape a problem because it can lead to negative consequences.
