- Once upon a time, there was a very kind girl named Yeh-Shen. She lived with her wicked stepsister and stepmother. They treated her very poorly and this is because the stepmother does it out of jealousy. She finds Yeh-Shen prettier than her own daughter, so the stepmother forces all the hard work upon her. You probably are wondering who is speaking to you right now. That is me, the fish in the river, also Yeh-Shen’s only companion.
- Yeh-Shen was always so trustful when she brought me all that delicious food all the time. But one time, her evil stepmother found about me, the poor girl’s only true friend, and tricked me. I thought that the person on land was Yeh-Shen because of the brown jacket she would always wear, but it was her stepmother with a dagger in hand ready to kill me. Poor Yeh-Shen knew nothing of this and was sent off for water while this happened.
- One day, during the poor girl's grieving over my bones and eaten flesh, a wise old man came to her to tell her about my magical spirits. He said, "All you must know is that I have been sent to tell you of the wondrous powers of your fish. The bones of your fish are filled with a powerful spirit. Whenever you are in serious need, you must kneel before them and let them know your heart's desire. But do not waste their gifts."
- From the day after the truth, she always asked for extra food because Yeh-Shen was not fed as well as her step-sister. Then the special preparations came. Every year in this cultural town, the spring festivals come and each family goes off to find someone to marry their young-ling to. Yeh-Shen's stepmother and stepsister went off, so naturally Yeh-Shen also wanted to go. She did not want to show up in the rags she always wore and so she asked for the better of what she originally wears. She was presented with a magnificent azure dress with great detail and spectacularly golden shoes.

- one of the golden shoes.  If I forgot to mention earlier, I watch over everything she does for I am a spirit.  Yeh-Shen made a promise to I and my spirits that she would bring back both golden shoes but to her shock when she got home, she only had one.  So my spirits did not speak to her when she asked for help.  For now, she was in despair.
- Is that our Yeh-Shen? Let me go and try get a closer look.
- When Yeh-Shen arrived, everyone was amazed by her beauty, including the king which Yeh-Shen didn't know of. She was also almost spotted by her step-sister and step-mother; but she didn't let that happen. Yeh-Shen ran out of the ballroom, town square, and crowds of people of the mountainous houses.  But while she was running, Yeh-Shen lost 
- Omg!  I was so upset when I found out I lost it!  Thank you so much for helping me.
- As you can see, the king returned the shoe to the saddened girl.  In the end, they got married because the King fell in love with Yeh-Shen, and this was a benefit for her because she was able to escape her evil step-mother and step-sister.  For me, my bones were forgotten but not for my spirits.
