  • The first generation of computers lasted from 1940 to 1955. These computers were powered by vacuum tubes. The computers in the first generation took up 15,000 square feet and weighed up to 30 tons.
  • The second generation of computers lasted from 1956 to 1963. Transistors took the place of the less efficient vacuum tubes as the source of power in computers. These computers were roughly 550 pounds.
  • The third generation of computers lasted from 1964 to 1970. The used integrated circuits as the form of power and function. These computers are roughly four or five square feet.
  • The fourth generation of computers started in 1971 and is still going on today. These computers use microprocessors for function. These computers are roughly three square feet.
  • I predict that the fifth generation of computers will have holographic screen that are projected out of the edge of the monitor. The computer is made out of a new lightweight metal.
  • I predict that the sixth generation of computers will be holographic phones with the screen project out from a piece in the phone case. these are also made of lightweight metal.
