  • 1. Today we are going to be exploring roman architecture! I will take you on a virtual tour. In a short 5 topic video. Enjoy!
  • Back to the basics
  • To start, lets talk about the basics of roman architecture. Arches! Romans usually used arches in their structures.
  • they used these arches because they could support lots of weight. Using arches helped make bigger, taller and better structures. The advanced buildings in Rome would not of been possible without the idea of building arches.
  • The Aqueduct
  • This is a roman aqueduct! In ancient Rome they used these aqueducts to carry water to buildings. They used arches to sustain the weight of the water and the height of the structure. Aqueducts were extremely important in the development of Rome.

  • Roman Temples
  • Famous structure 1
  • Famous Structure 2 / closing
  • Colosseum
  • The all mighty roman temple! These temples were an extreme advancement in roman structures. Using no arches at all! They were built to honor gods and they are a huge part of roman culture.
  • This is the Pantheon! The structure itself is an important example of advanced Roman engineering. Its walls are made from brick-faced concrete and are lightened with relieving arches and vaults built into the wall mass. The dome in the back is one of the greatest accomplishments in roman architecture. Taking 4-5 years to build using an elaborate setup of wooden scaffolding .
  • Last but not least the Colosseum! The Colosseum is a large structure that was used as a showroom type thing in ancient Rome. The building was another one of Romes greatest accomplishments. The inventions of concrete and arches (of course) made it possible for the massive structure to be built in such a short time.
