Storyboard Tekst

  • For thousands of years, indigenous people where the only people in America. But, it the 15th century, it all changed. Spanish colonizers made it there. They called North America "The New World".
  • Soon, the French arrived. They claimed lots of land in The New World, and the British did too. They all lived in a state of relatively peaceful existence.
  • Predictably, the French and the British fought over the land. Both sides wanted to own the highly valuable Ohio River Valley. The British and the Cherokee signed a treaty.
  • The British thought of the treaty as a display of their sovereignty over the Cherokee. The Cherokee believed the treaty meant that they only had an alliance. They believed it displayed that they were equal.
  • The Cherokee expected protection from Britain after forming their alliance. Britain did not protect them. The Cherokee started to take the British's horses and in South Carolina, the governor stopped trade with the Cherokee and took Cherokee hostages.
  • Tensions rose. The Cherokee War started, and it lasted from 1858-1861. It wiped out much of the Cherokee population.
