- Charles Martel, the "Hammer," a powerful mayor in the 700s of the Frankish Kingdoms, gained the support of the Church and had lots of strength in battle.
- Charles Martel
- In 732, Charles Martel led the Franks in one of the most important European battles in history, the Battle of Tours. Martel and his army defeated an army of Arabs and Berbers who were hoping to spread their Muslim religion. The Frank's victory kept Christianity alive in western Europe.
- Pepin, the son of Charles Martel, started a new dynasty. He was the first Frankish king to be anointed, or blessed with holy oil, by the Pope. Pepin helped the Pope when he was threatened by a group of Germans known as Lombards. He gave the land they held in central Italy to the Pope, making him the ruler of much of the Italian Peninsula.
