- She clearly does not understand how much danger she is putting us in. There is no way that she can be teaching him the alphabet and how to read. Once she does that he will be able to read how other slaves are being treated and how they gained their freedom and he will try to do the same. She MUST be warned.
- Stop teaching Douglass to read. He is a slave and therefore does not need to be treated like a human but like a slave. If he learns to read he will then become unhappy.

- The mistress (the wife of the master) is teaching Douglass his ABC’s - the basic steps to reading.
- I will make sure that he is even more pleased. Douglass better be ready for this new mistress.
- Master’s point of view of what Mistress was doing.

- It seems to me that Mistress has taken the exchange of words that she had with Master to heart and now her heart is equivalent to stone.
- Master is talking to his wife and telling her not to teach the slave how to read because once the slave knows how to read - they will become unhappy.
- Mistress has placed me in a hole of darkness. She has set my learning into motion and therefore the wheels will not stop turning. I must find another way to acquire education.
- The mistress is thinking to herself that she will not only do what her husband said but she will do better. She will overdo it so she can make sure that he is happy.
- Douglass is reading and Mistress is mad. Her heart has now become stone.
- Douglass is now expressing his personal feelings about what Mistress is doing to him. By stopping his education exactly what Master said will come to pass.
