  • Good Morning, Guys! Looks like Renee is absent today. Okay, lets start with the lesson. Today we are going to be learning about the time Texas was annexed into the US
  • Texans advocated for annexation by the U. S. sooner than 1836, but the Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren administrations opposed the proposal.
  • The United Kingdom favored Texas' continued independence in order to prevent the United States from expanding west, but this stance only served to push Americans towards annexation. The Texas and United States congresses authorized annexation in 1845, and power was transferred from the Republic to Texas in 1846.
  • A clause in the annexation agreements that enabled Texas to keep ownership of its public lands was a one-of-a-kind feature. The Mexican-American War erupted as a result of the United States' annexation of Texas and a conflict over the territory between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River. In February 1847, US troops invaded Mexico, and on September 14, 1847, Winfield Scott captured Mexico City.
  • Mexico gave up its claim to Texas in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago, which was signed on February 2, 1848, and also gave land that is now in the US states of New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, and western Colorado.
  • The majority of this additional land was claimed by Texas, but it was later relinquished in the 1850 Compromise. Okay so thats it for today! Any questions!
  • Usually, I don't like history but this was actually pretty interesting. I can't wait until we have projects on it!
