  • Little Rock, Arkansas. Most schools were segregated due to the Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954.
  • September 1957, the school board in Little Rock was under federal court, requiring 9 African American students to enter Little Rock’s Central High School.
  • The governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, was a defender of white supremacy. He ordered troops of the National Guard to prevent the 9 African American students from entering the school.
  • Those students are not allowed into that school!
  • The National Guard surround the high school and a white mob gathered to intimidate the students. President Eisenhower couldn’t allow Faubus to defy the federal government. He ordered faubus to remove the troops but, the governor left the school with the angry white mob.
  • Go away!
  • We can't let you in!
  • None of us want you here!
  • Eisenhower knew he had to act. He ordered 1000 soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division to ensure the Little Rock 9 enter the school safely.
  • Send the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock.
  • In 1958, Governor Faubus closed down all of the schools in Little Rock for one year instead of continuing integration in schools. This left thousands of black and white students without access to public education.
