Who is Athena?

- Athena is the goddess of war and wisdom. She is one of the twelve Olympian Gods. She is the patroness of the city of Athens
- Athena’s birth was truly amazing. Metis, Zeus’ first wife, found out that she was pregnant with their baby and rushed over to Zeus to tell him the news. However, Zeus feared that the child might overthrow him, so, he tricked her into turning into a fly and swallowed her
- Metis still in the form of the fly gave birth to Athena. Athena grew inside of Zeus. Metis wanted her daughter to be ready for the real world so she forged her armor. This caused Zeus to have big headaches.
- One day however he couldn’t take it anymore and asked Hephaestus to smash his skull open to release whatever was inside. When Zeus’ head spilt opened Athena came out fully dressed with armor
- Athens has Athena as their patron god. But what was the story behind it all? You are about to find out. When Athens was still a new city that lacked a patron or patroness god or goddess Athena and Posiden both wanted that city as their own. They argued about who should win the city.
- Athena came up with a solution, they would both give the people a gift, then, the people of the city would decide which gifted they liked most. Poseidon gave a sea at the edge of the city which would make the city very wealthy and a great center of trade. Athena, on the other hand, gave an olive tree. The simple olive tree, however, would give wood, food, and would be an important resource for trade.
