  • Thomas Jefferson was looking for ways to expand America so he bought land from the french for $15 million and doubled the size of the United States. It opened up possibilitys for westward expansion.

  • Lewis and Clark spent 123 miles of their 8,000-mile journey in Kansas. They described it as a "great beauty...variety of game...deer seemed plentiful...abundance of wild raspberries."

  • Would you rather be Happy or have a country covered in forests with a few thousand scavengers.
  • Zebulon Pike was the first American to travel the territory by land and he described Kansas as a desert and thought the land was worthless. He said "These vast plains...may become in time equally celebrated as the sandy deserts of Africa..." and it made people wonder if the land could be cultivated.

  • Stephen long traveled by steamboat and he labeled the area to become Kansas "The great American Desert". The view of Kansas stuck and it influenced the US government's settlement policies for years to come.
  • Jackson's speech said would you rather have a country covered in forests and a few thousand scavengers. When you could have towns, cities, and farms with 12,000,000 happy people.
  • The Americans forced East American Indians to relocate to Kansas and other areas because of the descriptions of Kansas. They didn't think Americans could farm/ survive there.
