  • The doctor is prescribing Simvastatin for high cholesterol. It inhibits the enzyme responsible for making cholesterol and lowers your LDL. 
  • Are there any side effects?
  • Abdominal pain, rash and headache are most common. Less common is muscle pain, that can progress into a serious condition called Rhabdomyolysis. Call your doctor if you have muscle pain or changes in urine color. 
  • Is it ok if I still take my other home medications? 
  • Drug-food interactions: patients are advised to limit grapefruit juice to less than 1 quart daily because it can increase risk for drug toxicity. Do you have any other questions?

  • Rhabdomyolysis is the break down of muscle proteins along with myoglobinuria which can lead to renal failure and death.
  • Drug-drug interactions: oral anticoagulants, erythromycin, azole antifungals, verapamil, diltiazem, HIV and hepatitis C protease inhibitor, and amiodarone. contraindications: known drug allergy, pregnant, patients with liver disease or elevations of liver enzymes
