  • NEW PRESIDENT OF GALLADET UNIVERSITY: ELISABETH ZINSER
  • Elisabeth: Hello everyone I am your new president.
  • March 6th, 1988
  • Greg Hilbrok: How can you have a hearing president of a deaf school?
  • Jerry Covell: I don't understand. What can we do to change this?
  • Day 2:
  • March 6th. 1988 Elisabeth is nominated the new president of Galladet University, tells all the students she is well educated and will be a great school leader.
  • Day 3:
  • DEAF PRESIDENT NOW!
  • Greg and Jerry wanted a deaf president for their school. Elisabeth was hearing and did not sign. This upset all the students so they started a protest.
  • Day 4:
  • The four demands we want 1) deaf president to be selected and Zinser to be resigned; 2) the chair of the Board of Trustees (Spilman) to be resigned 3) at least 51% of the deaf members on the Board of Trustees 4) no reprisals against any protestors.
  • The students began to lock down the school. Tehy protested going to class and put busses in front of the gates so no one could get in.
  • Day 8:
  • There were four students that had led the protest and they were Bridgetta Bourne, Greg Hlibok, Jerry Covell and Tim Rarus.
  • Elisabeth Zinser came to Washington D.C. thinking she could stop it. She, Dr. I King Jordan, and the four student leaders met at a hotel for a personal meeting together.Student leaders tried to convince Zinser to step down. But she refused. Then the protest went on.
  • All the wishes of the students were met. Spilman had resigned Bravin was named the next chair of the Board of Trustees. This protest changed deaf past present and future.
