- The well-known artist Basil Hallward meets Dorian Gray, a rich, cultured and beautiful young man. Basil is immediately struck by his beauty so he starts doing some paintings of him.
- One painting is especially beautiful, but Lord Henry, Dorian's lustful friend, doesn't like it.
- You are certainly beautiful and young, but beauty is only transient and sooner or later you'll get old.
